'Lab-grown' diamonds are created in a lab with the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds, and are a more affordable and possibly more environmentally friendly choice.

The 'Colored' category includes both natural and lab-grown diamonds that have been treated to display a range of colors, from vivid yellow to rare blues, browns, and pinks, perfect for those seeking a unique and eye-catching stone.

This filter will help you make a choice that suits your ethical considerations, aesthetic preferences, and budget.

Diamond types

The carat weight of a diamond refers to its size, with one carat equalling 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. It is one of the most important factors in determining the value of a diamond. A higher carat weight often indicates a larger diamond, but it is essential to consider the overall quality, including cut, color and clarity. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can differ significantly in value depending on these other factors.

Carat weight does not always directly correspond to the visual size of the diamond, as the cut and proportions can affect how big the diamond appears. While carat weight is an essential aspect of a diamond's identity, it should therefore be considered in conjunction with other quality elements to determine the diamond's true value and appearance.

Carat weight

The price per carat is a standard measure used to compare the cost of diamonds. It represents the price of the diamond divided by its carat weight, and it is a useful way to understand how a diamond's size and quality relate to its price. The price per carat can vary widely based on various factors, such as the cut, color, clarity and market demand. A higher carat weight often leads to a higher price per carat, but the relationship is not always linear. Other characteristics, such as a high-quality cut or top color quality, can also significantly influence the price per carat.

By using the price per carat as a guide, buyers can better understand how different characteristics affect the price of a diamond and compare different stones more accurately. 

It is an essential tool in determining overall value and ensuring that a particular diamond fits within the buyer's budget and preferences.

Price per carat

The round brilliant is the most popular diamond shape, praised for its superior light reflection and brilliance. This shape is characterized by its symmetrical circular outline, which contributes to maximum light performance and aesthetic appeal.

The Princess cut is a square diamond shape, loved for its modern look and sharp angles. This shape is known for its unique facet pattern that creates a vibrant sparkle, ideal for contemporary style.

The Cushion cut, with its gentle angles and square to rectangular shape, combines a classic look with modern brilliance. Known for its 'cushion' contour, this shape offers rich depth and unique brilliance, loved for its vintage charm.

The oval diamond shape, recognizable by its elongated, symmetrical shape, offers an elegant look with a unique brilliance. This shape is ideal for those who want a traditional brilliant with a distinctive, modern touch.

The Pear cut, a combination of the round and marquise shapes, is known for its unique 'teardrop' shape. This shape offers deep brilliance and is loved for its elegant, sleek look that is both classic and striking.

Characterized by its elongated, rectangular shape and beveled corners, the Emerald cut is known for its distinctive 'step' facets. This shape emphasizes the diamond's clarity and pure lines, making it a sophisticated choice for lovers of classic, elegant style.

A symbol of romance, the Heart cut is a complex shape that requires craftsmanship to create the perfect heart shape. This shape, with its distinctive split top and rounded lobes, is particularly popular for sentimental jewelry pieces because of its unique and distinctly romantic look.

The Radiant cut, with its striking combination of the brilliant and emerald shapes, offers vibrant brilliance in a rectangular or square shape. This shape is loved for its deep fire and clarity, combined with beveled corners for a modern, versatile look.

A variant of the emerald shape, the Asscher cut is a deeply cut, almost square shape with beveled corners and distinctive step facets. Often associated with vintage elegance, this unique shape is known for its ability to highlight depth and clarity, resulting in a distinctive, reflective look.

The Marquise cut, also known as the 'navette' shape, is long and slender with pointed ends, inspired by the Marquise de Pompadour's smile. This shape maximizes the carat weight and makes the diamond appear larger, making it an excellent choice for striking and sophisticated style.

The shape of a diamond refers to its physical shape or outline when viewed from above. The most popular diamond shape is the round brilliant, known for its optimal light performance. Other shapes, known as fancy shapes or cuts, include princess (square), emerald (rectangular with cut corners), oval, pear, marquise (boat-shaped), cushion, radiant and heart. 

Each shape has a unique arrangement of facets that affects the brilliance and overall aesthetic appeal of the diamond. 

The choice of shape is largely a matter of personal preference and style.

Stone shape

Good - Diamonds with a good cut have more significant deviations from ideal proportions, but they still have good symmetry and overall appearance. These diamonds may show less brilliance, fire and scintillation than diamonds with a higher cut, but they are more affordable and still look good.

Very Good - Diamonds with very good cut quality are cut in almost ideal proportions, but they may be slightly deeper or shallower cut, or have slightly larger or smaller table percentages. These diamonds still exhibit a high level of brilliance, fire and sparkle, and are an excellent value for their price.

Excellent - Diamonds with an excellent cut quality are also cut with great precision, but they may have minor discrepancies that prevent them from achieving an ideal cut quality. These diamonds still have excellent brilliance, fire and sparkle, and are a popular choice for engagement rings.

Ideal - This is the highest cut for a diamond and is reserved for diamonds cut in precise proportions to maximize brilliance, fire and sparkle. Diamonds with an Ideal cut are exceptionally rare and command a high price.

A diamond's cut refers to the craftsmanship of the rough stone. It determines how well the diamond reflects light, contributing to its brilliance and sparkle. Cut quality ranges from "Excellent", where light is reflected to the maximum, to "Poor", which can result in a dull appearance. Cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond, but to the quality of the faceting process.

Diamonds with an SI2 clarity grade contain inclusions that may be visible to the naked eye, but offer an attractive value for the price-conscious buyer.

'SI1' (Small Inclusions) diamonds have inclusions visible under 10x magnification, offering a good balance between quality and cost, especially when the inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.

Diamonds rated 'VS2' (Very Small Inclusions 2) have small inclusions that are difficult to see without magnification, making them an excellent choice for those who value Clarity.

'VS1' (Very Small Inclusions) diamonds possess minimal inclusions not visible to the naked eye, and are ideal for buyers who want a near-perfect diamond without the high price of higher clarity grades.

Diamonds with a VVS2 (Very Very Small Inclusions 2) clarity grade contain very small inclusions that are difficult to detect even under 10x magnification, and are known for their excellent clarity.

'VVS1' (Very Very Small Inclusions 1) diamonds have even smaller inclusions than VVS2, almost impossible to detect even under 10x magnification, and offer exceptional Clarity for the most discerning buyers.

'IF' (Internally Flawless) diamonds are free of internal inclusions under 10x magnification, making them a rare and precious choice for lovers of pure perfection.

'FL' (Flawless) diamonds are the rarest and most prestigious, lacking both internal and external characteristics, and represent the pinnacle of clarity and quality.

The 'Clarity' filter is crucial when choosing a diamond and concerns the presence of internal features, known as inclusions, and external features, known as spots. 

This filter allows customers to choose a diamond that meets their specific requirements for Clarity and aesthetics.

Clarity

Yellow diamonds offer a vibrant, sunny hue, ranging from light to deep yellow, and are popular for their striking, warm appearance.

Red and pink diamonds are extremely rare and sought-after, with their striking colors ranging from soft shades of pink to deep red, symbolizing love and passion.

Blue diamonds are rare and sought-after, with hues ranging from light sky blue to deep ocean blue, often associated with royalty and elegance.

Green diamonds, rare and striking, have a unique color ranging from light, minty hues to deep, saturated green, and symbolize nature and renewal.

Brown diamonds, often referred to as 'cognac' or 'champagne' diamonds, offer a range of warm, earthy tones, popular for their versatility and affordability compared to other colored diamonds.

Color grade H represents a slightly tinted diamond, often with a slight yellow shine, but which is still almost colorless and goes well with various jewelry styles.

Diamonds with color grade G are considered almost colorless, with minimal hue that is difficult to perceive, giving them an excellent balance between quality and value.

Colored diamonds are virtually colorless, with only a very slight tint that can only be detected by experts under specific conditions, and are known for their purity and attractive appearance.

Diamonds with color grade E belong to the top category of almost colorless stones, with only microscopic traces of color that can only be distinguished by diamond professionals.

Color grade D represents the highest color category, completely colorless and extremely rare, and is considered the ultimate standard for colorless diamonds.

Color plays a crucial role when choosing diamonds, especially when assessing the presence of a yellowish hue in the stone. 

Diamonds with a high degree of transparency and Clarity are highly coveted. The color scale runs from D (the peak of whiteness) to Z, indicating an increasing degree of yellowish or brownish hue. 

For a superior-quality diamond, it is advisable to choose a color grade no lower than G. The difference between grades D to G is subtle to the naked eye, but a G-quality diamond can save 20% to 40%. 

For settings in yellow or rose gold, consider diamonds with a lower color grade, as these shades effectively mask the hue of the stone.

Color

A diamond's 'polish' refers to the surface finish and is an important factor in determining the stone's overall quality and brilliance. 

In the filter options, 'GD' (Good) represents a diamond where the polish has minor imperfections that are slightly visible under a magnifying glass, but are usually indistinguishable to the naked eye. 

'VG' (Very Good) indicates a higher quality polish, where any imperfections are even smaller and barely visible even under magnification. 

The highest quality, 'EX' (Excellent), denotes an exceptional finish with no or minimal visible imperfections, even under 10x magnification, resulting in maximum brilliance and reflection of light. 

These filter options allow customers to choose a diamond that suits their quality requirements and budget.

Polish

The symmetry of a diamond refers to the precision of the diamond's cut, more specifically how the facets align and intersect. It is an assessment of the diamond's proportion, balance and uniformity. 

Symmetry is rated on a scale from excellent to poor. 

Excellent symmetry means that the facets are aligned and proportional, so the diamond captures and reflects light optimally. 

Poor symmetry can result in misaligned facets that interfere with the flow of light, reducing the brilliance and visual appeal of the diamond. The importance of symmetry lies in its ability to influence a diamond's interaction with light. 

Proper symmetry ensures that light is efficiently refracted and reflected, maximizing the brilliance, fire and sparkle of the diamond. Even small deviations in symmetry can affect the overall appearance and value of the diamond, making it an essential aspect to consider when choosing a stone.

Symmetry

When exposed to UV light, such as that from a standard black light, diamonds with high fluorescence exhibit particles that give off a visible (usually blue) glow. 

The most desirable diamond is one with no fluorescence; after that come weak, medium, strong and very strong stones. High fluorescence levels can cause stones to look milky or hazy in unusual conditions. 

Fluorescence, on the other hand, does not always impact beauty and brilliance; it can even make some lower colors (I, J, K, L) appear brighter or whiter. 

We recommend buying a diamond without fluorescence.

Fluorescence

The depth of a diamond refers to the distance between the table (the flat top surface) and the culet (the pointed bottom) of the stone. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the total width of the diamond, called the depth percentage. 

The depth percentage is crucial because it affects the way light travels inside the diamond, which affects its brilliance and sparkle. An ideal depth percentage allows light to reflect off the facets in just the right way, maximizing the diamond's visual appeal. 

For a round brilliant-cut diamond, the depth percentage is usually considered ideal if it is between 59% and 62.3%. Too shallow or too deep a depth can cause light to escape the sides or bottom of the stone, resulting in a less brilliant and fiery appearance. 

Essentially, the depth of a diamond plays a crucial role in the stone's overall aesthetics, and achieving the right depth percentage is vital to unlock its full beauty and value.

Depth

The table of a diamond is the flat surface at the top of the stone, and it is the largest facet of a diamond. The size of the table is often expressed as a percentage of the total width of the diamond, known as the table percentage. 

The table percentage is important because it affects the way the diamond catches and reflects light, thus affecting its brilliance. 

The ideal table percentage can vary depending on the shape and overall proportions of the diamond, but for a round brilliant-cut diamond, a table percentage between 54% and 57% is often considered ideal. Too large or too small a table can disturb the balance of light reflection and refraction in the diamond, making the diamond look less beautiful.

An ideal table percentage ensures that the facets of the diamond interact with light in a way that maximizes brilliance and fire and contributes to the overall beauty of the stone.

Table

Length-to-width ratio - The width-to-length ratio determines how elongated a fancy diamond appears when viewed from above by comparing the length of a diamond to its width. 

The ratio of length to width is a matter of personal preference, with some people preferring a more elongated shape and others preferring a more even or square shape. 

The most popular length-to-width ratios for fancy shapes are listed below. For example: A Princess cut diamond measuring 5.05 mm long by 5.00 mm has a length-to-width ratio of 1.01 (5.05/5.00), and will look perfectly square. 

Princess: 1.00-1.05
Radiant: 1.00-1.05
Asscher: 1.00-1.05
Cushion: 1.00-1.05
Heart: 0.90-1.10
Emerald: 1.30-1.40
Oval: 1.30-1.70
Pear: 1.45-1.75
Marquise: 1.75-2.30

L/B ratio

The 'Certificate' filter in diamond selection refers to the origin and quality assessment of the diamond, verified by reputable certification bodies.

'GIA' stands for the Gemological Institute of America, known for its rigorous standards and detailed reports, and is a globally respected authority in diamond certification. The "standard" natural diamonds we sell from a certain size onwards have a GIA certificate in XXXN.

'IGI', or International Gemological Institute, also offers reliable certification with a focus on both detail and consumer information. For Lab grown, this is almost always an IGI report.

'HRD', or High Diamond Council, based in Antwerp, is known for its expertise in diamond certification, especially within the European market.

The 'NONE' option means that the diamond has not been certified by any of these institutes, potentially affecting the price and verifiability of its quality.

This filter allows you to make an informed choice based on reliability and recognition of the certificate.
