What is a sardonyx?

As the name suggests, a layered stone consists of multiple layers of gemstone material. These layers vary in color. During engraving, the top layer is carefully removed by hand by a master engraver. This reveals the underlying color. The result? A beautiful contrast that gives your engraving extra depth and character.

What types of layered stones are there?

At DiamondsByMe, we offer various layered stones, each with a unique look:

• Blue sardonyx: Available in light blue, blue and dark blue. These stones have a black base layer that provides a stylish contrast.
• Red sardonyx: This stone has a milky white top layer and a warm red base layer that becomes visible after engraving.
• Green sardonyx: This unusual variety combines a light top layer with a green to blue-green bottom layer.

Alternatives to layered stones

In addition to layered stones, you can also choose other stones, depending on the desired effect of the engraving:

• Lapis lazuli – Deep blue with golden speckles, without color contrast but with visible engraving.
• Carnelian – Warm red-orange color, with the difference in depth making the engraving visible.
• Bloodstone – Dark green with red dots, for a mysterious look.
• Onyx – Completely black. Engravings are subtly visible, especially due to the difference in gloss and height.

Sardonyx in signet rings

Signet rings can be made special in two ways: by engraving solid precious metal or by engraving a gemstone such as sardonyx. Both techniques have their own charm, symbolism and craftsmanship.

A traditional signet ring is often made of solid gold – yellow gold, white gold or rose gold. With these rings, the top is engraved using laser engraving or hand engraving. This involves removing material from the gold with extreme precision, creating a relief that gives the ring depth and character. This form of engraving is permanent and extremely durable.

However, what makes a signet ring even more unique is the stone inlay, also known as a sardonyx. Think of gemstones such as onyx, bloodstone or carnelian – each with its own color and meaning. The most popular choice is the blue sardonyx, a stone that consists of different layers. When craftsmen engrave this with an extremely fine burr, the top layer is slowly ground away. As the engraving is deepened, a second color appears – for example, black under the blue. This creates a beautiful contrast and a rich, classic look. It is this technique that gave signet rings their name: in the past, these stones were used to leave a seal in lacquer on important documents.
